The short serious bit
Why is BT so focused on listening to young people?
Well, in 2002, BT
commissioned an independent research company to undertake
the 'Are
Young People Being Heard?' research. The key findings
of this research establish that the majority of children and
young people in the UK believe that their voices are not being
heard and acted upon.
Significantly, the research also revealed what could happen
if young people and adults listen more to each other: real
social problems could be resolved, understanding between adults
and young people could be improved, and young people could
gain more confidence.
Following this research, the 'Am
I Listening?' campaign was established to raise awareness
of these issues - and also to raise more funds to help ChildLine,
a long term charity partner of BT.
The fundraising is important, but
working with ChildLine, we have also launched two publications
- The Listening Guide
- to help adults get better at listening to children and young
people, and the How
to Make Yourself Heard toolkit - designed to help young
people make their voices heard. And in partnership with the
UK
Youth Parliament, we have published the Seen & Heard
publications - a collection of case studies which focus on
young people who have tackled real social issues by speaking
out. These case studies show the positive contribution that
young people can make when they succeed in making their voices
heard - and when adults listen and act upon what they hear.
