Listening Challenge

The Big Listen-o-meter is a paper folding game that can be used to test your friends and family to see if they really listen to you. All you need to do is print off one of the Listen-o-meters below:

Big Listen-o-meter 1 (for black & white printer/copier)
- colour in and fill in your own questions

Big Listen-o-meter 2 (for colour printer/copier)
- questions are already inside, you just need to fill in your own personal answers

How to play

Choose a family member, teacher or friend as your partner for the game. Your partner will choose one of the four colours on the outside of the Big Listen-o-meter. You then open it and shut it in opposite directions once for each letter in the colour chosen. Next, your partner chooses one of the numbers inside and you will count as you open and close. Let your partner choose again and do the same. The third time your partner must pick a question and has to guess the answer to the question. Once they have answered, you can fold it back to reveal a statement or the answer. Then carry on playing the game until they've answered all your questions.

How to make your Listen-o-meter

Print out Listen-o-meter 1 if you have a black & white printer and colour in the areas yourself. If you have access to a colour printer then print out Listen-o-meter 2. If you do not have access to a printer get a plain piece of paper and make it into a square using scissors. For all the above methods use the directions below:

  1. Fold the opposite points of the square together (forming a triangle), then fold over again to make a smaller triangle
  2. Open the paper up completely
  3. Fold a corner into the central point and repeat with the other three corners - you will end up with a smaller square
  4. Flip the paper over
  5. Fold a corner over to the centre, repeat with the other three corners - you'll end up with an even smaller square
  6. Fold the square in half to make a rectangle. Unfold and fold in half the other way
  7. Unfold and then comes the tricky bit! Pull the four corners upwards AND together, making a diamond-like shape. Pick up each of the four square flaps underneath, and put your fingers inside. You will now be able to move the four parts around
  8. Open it out, and write the numbers from 1 to 8 on each of the triangular flaps
  9. Then write your 8 questions on the triangular flaps (this is if you are not using Listen-o-meter 2 which already has questions on)
  10. Then write your answers underneath each flap
  11. You are now ready to get your family, friends or teachers to listen... and learn!

Before you start, ask a responsible adult to help with any cutting out or with the instructions above if you get stuck.
