Faith Groups

"Young people ask lots of questions and they must be answered. One must know why one does things and firmly believe in them instead of doing them without knowing why." Ahtsham Ali, Vice President, Islamic SocietyIf you are active in your local place of worship, you will know that listening is one of the most important skills when working with children and young people.

The Big Listen offered lots of ways for faith groups to get involved in asking questions and listening to young people. Here are some ways to get started:

  • Why not combine a listening event with fundraising for ChildLine? Hold a coffee morning for all the places of worship in your local area and share information on your different religions? There are hundreds of fun and exciting ways you can fundraise for ChildLine. The fundraising pack will help you to plan and run your activities and the downloads will provide you with many of the materials you will need
  • The Listening Challenges page is about fun ways to practice those essential listening and questioning skills
  • Help other groups to get involved too by sharing your ideas.

Have a look at our Big Breakfast 2005 summary. This brief document highlights the main topics of discussion at last year's Big Breakfasts and may be just what you need to help you develop new ideas for exciting events.  Could you organise your own Big Breakfast?

What’s your Big Question?

Asking questions about faith and religion – yours or someone else’s – may seem tricky. But don’t be shy! It’s important to understand the beliefs that people hold. If you want to ask about faith issues, and you want to make sure that you get good answers to your question, check out Connect. Published by the Inter Faith Network for the UK in association with TimeBank and the National Youth Agency, Connect offers guidance on interacting with people of different faiths, and also gives advice on how to ask about religion in an open, friendly manner (pp. 12-13). If your Big Question is about religion, take a look at Connect.
